My first involvement in the energy sector was as a Community (volunteer) Director at the Shoreditch Trust. In partnership with the local authority, we led on the development of a district heating project for a social housing programme in Hackney in East London. At the time I was working as a solicitor advising some of the largest corporate entities in the City of London. However, I soon came to appreciate the terrible affect which is caused to the health and life chances of an adult or child living in a cold, damp or poorly lit home. I also came to realise that energy efficiency is the cure and this realisation encouraged me to start Community Energy and make the move into the energy sector.
The fundamentals of an advanced economy and society are a progressive and a sustainable energy policy. Energy is the basis for many of the major issues in our society – from Climate Change to the credit crunch – they are all linked to the extraction, supply and consumption of oil, gas and other fuels.
The NRFC will continue to work with Government, energy utilities, local government and civil society to come forward with new policies that ensure that everyone in the UK can live in a warm and well lit home.
