Hugh Goulbourne, Chair of NRFC responds to today’s Guardian newspaper report on Fuel Poverty

“The NRFC welcomes this extremely important report from the Guardian. With UK households squeezed by high energy prices, ambulance falling salaries and winter temperatures it is clear that much more money is needed on fuel poverty measures. The Government’s consultation on the new Energy Company Obligation gives some hope in the form of funding for energy efficiency measures for low income and vulnerable households from 2013. However, pill this will bring relief to only 840,000 fuel poor households by 2015, leaving at least 3 million households to choose between heating and eating. If Government is serious about this programme then more money must be found from VAT receipts or carbon taxes.”
